Tien Giang (VNA) –
The southern coastal province of Tien Giangis losing large areas of protective forest due to coast erosion, whichthreatens the safety of the Go Cong sea dyke.

Protective forests provide a strong shield for the 20km long sea dykeprotecting tens of thousands of households in Go Cong Dong district.

According to Nguyen Thien Phap, head of the provincial irrigation and floodand storm control division, the protective forest belt used to be between100-700m wide from the sea, but strong erosion has damaged around 6.5 km offorests since 2000, with no forest left in some sections, exposing the sea dyketo the sea.

To cope with the phenomenon, which is growing more serious in recentyears, Tien Giang has taken some measures such as concreting the side of thesea dykes and piloting the use of soft structure to alleviate waves, collectsediment and create new beaches.

After more than one year, the 1.4km long soft dyke has produced some newalluvial ground, and the province is planting trees there to see whether theycan grow.

Phap said the paving of dyke is only a provisional measure, stressingthat the sea dyke can only be safe when there are protective forests.

Viet𝓡nam ramps up plastic waste recycling, reuse, treatmꦫent efforts

In 2019, Quang Ninh became one of the first localities in Vietnam to launch a province-wide campaign against plastic waste, mobilising the participation of the political system, the business sector, and the general public. Other localities—such as Hai Phong, Da Nang, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City—have also effectively implemented waste-sorting initiatives at source, along with models for plastic-free markets and urban areas.
