According to the statistics released by the National Committee forTraffic Safety, more than 11,200 people died and almost 7,800 othersinjured in traffic accidents last year, up to 21 percent of whom arechildren under 19 years old.

The Ministry of Public Security’s Department of Rail and Road TrafficPolice (DRRTP) said that more than 2,900 children under 15 have died inroad accidents since 2006.

Speaking at a press meeting on road traffic safety for children inHanoi on Sept. 24, Deputy Minister of Transport and Communication LeManh Hung said that around 90 percent of children are taken to schoolsby motorbikes, so it is necessary to wear helmets to prevent traumatichead injuries when accidents occur.

Once the Government’s draft decree on punishing road traffic violationsis adopted, the driver will be responsible for the fine when childmotorbike passenger do not wear a helmet.

Senior lieutenant colonel Tran Son from the DRRTP said that since theGovernment’s Resolution on forcing motorbike users to wear helmets whenon a motorbike took effect on Dec. 15, 2007, the number of people diefrom traffic accidents nationwide has fallen from 35 to 31 per day./.
