US, Indonesia highlight international law abidance in East Sea

Hanoi (VNA) - US Secretary of State Michael Pompeoand Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi discussed bilateral defence tiesand regional tensions over China’s claim that it owns most of the South China Sea (called the East Sea in Vietnam), theUS Department of State said in a readout of the conversation on August 3.
According to the readout, the officials highlighted theUS-Indonesia strategic partnership and their shared goal of respect forinternational law in the East Sea.
Pompeo and Marsudi also stressed the importance of increasedpublic health and economic cooperation to rebuild the two countries’ economiesas well as keep the region safe.
Earlier, Indonesia expressed concern over escalated tensionsin the waters and called on China to adhere to international law, including the1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), to settledisputes.
During a virtual meeting with her Chinese counterpart WangYi on July 30, Marsudi said there is a need for China, as a signatory to theTreaty of Amity and Cooperation (TAC), to abide by the code of conduct whiletrying to resolve disputes related to the East Sea with Southeast Asiancountries./.
The 9th annual CSIS East Sea conference took place in Washington D.C on July 24, focusing on challenges in managing disputes in the sea and international interests related to the sea.
