USAID-funded project helps Thua Thien-Hue reduce waste on rivers

A non-refundable assistance package provided by the US Agency for International Development (USAID) for the central province of Thua Thien-Hue to recycle urban waste has reaped positive results since its launch in August 2018.

Thua Thien-Hue (VNA) – Anon-refundable assistance package provided by the USAgency for International Development (USAID) for the central province of ThuaThien-Hue to recycle urban waste has reaped positive results since its launchin August 2018.

The USAID-fundedproject, worth53,858 USD, aims to improve the ecologicalenvironment and minimise pollution caused by plastic waste in Hue city, localrivers and coastal areas of the province. 

It is also hoped to contribute to raising publicawareness of negative effects of plastic waste on the environment, as well asthe importance of promoting efforts to protect the environment.

The project includesa workshop discussing measures to reduce waste on Huong River and waterways,campaigns to collect waste on local beaches, a waste classification programme,and contests to gather initiatives on protecting the environment. 

The two-year projectsets a target to reduce 5 percent of solid waste discharged into theenvironment by classifying waste at local schools and promoting the 4R modelthrough extracurricular activities for students. After seven months, more than1,630 kg of recyclable waste have been collected.

To implement theproject, the provincial Centre for Social Research and Development (CSRD) also set up trashtraps in six locations along Huong River to collect waste, especially plasticgarbage. The move has proved its effectiveness while saving costs and labour, saidCSRD Director Pham Thi Dieu My.

Nguyen Truong Son, General Director of the Hue UrbanEnvironment and Public Works Joint Stock Company, said local rivershave seen an increasing amount of waste over the years, especially at locationsclose to markets and trading areas.

Hue city alone generates about 260 tonnes of garbageeach day, of which nearly 8 percent is plastic waste and bags, he added.-VNA

Vi꧟etnam ramps up plastic waste recycling, re༺use, treatment efforts

In 2019, Quang Ninh became one of the first localities in Vietnam to launch a province-wide campaign against plastic waste, mobilising the participation of the political system, the business sector, and the general public. Other localities—such as Hai Phong, Da Nang, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City—have also effectively implemented waste-sorting initiatives at source, along with models for plastic-free markets and urban areas.

Hundreds of trees planted in Cuc Phuong ﷽National Park as part of Forestival

Renowned artists including Ha Anh Tuan, Den Vau, and Phan Manh Quynh, along with many directors and attendees, took part in planting hundreds of rare tree species such as mun (Diospyros mun) and cho chi (Parashorea chinensis) in the Thung Bong area of the Cuc Phuong National Park, contributing to forest ecosystem restoration.
