USAID launches new campaign against illegal wildlife trade

The US Agency for International Development (USAID), in partnership with Vietnam CITES Management Authority, launched a campaign on November 11 called “Ngung tao nghiep” (Stop karma), to call for an end to the illegal trade of ivory and pangolin scales in Vietnam.

HCM City (VNA) - The US Agency for International Development (USAID), inpartnership with Vietnam CITES Management Authority, launched a campaign onNovember 11 called “Ngung tao nghiep” (Stop karma), to call for an end to the illegaltrade of ivory and pangolin scales in Vietnam.

Part ofUSAID’s Saving Species Project, the campaign aims to use its messages - “Buyone ivory, get one karma” and “Buy one pangolin, get one karma” - to reduceconsumer demand for wildlife products and stop the trade and use of such productsas gifts.

RobertLayng, head of USAID Vietnam’s environment and energy office, said this is a campaignfor meaningful change to social behaviour that seeks to raise community’sawareness about the conservation of natural ecosystems and wildlife.

USAIDVietnam expects the new campaign will deliver a wake-up call to everybody, so thatpeople will change their minds and behaviour about the consumption of wildlifeproducts before it’s too late, he said.

Layngalso called on the business community to join the campaign by carrying out awide range of corporate social responsibility activities in wildlifeprotection. Enterprises could promote their business ethics and enhance theirreputation, improving their competitiveness in the marketplace, he added./.

🐷 Vietnam pioneers use of AI and remote sensing to monitor seawater quality

According to Dr. Vu Anh Tuan, Deputy Director General of the Vietnam Space Centre and head of the project, this is the first study in Vietnam to simultaneously employ Sentinel-2 satellite data, advanced machine learning algorithms, and the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud computing platform to model and monitor key seawater quality parameters.

In 2019, Quang Ninh became one of the first localities in Vietnam to launch a province-wide campaign against plastic waste, mobilising the participation of the political system, the business sector, and the general public. Other localities—such as Hai Phong, Da Nang, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City—have also effectively implemented waste-sorting initiatives at source, along with models for plastic-free markets and urban areas.
