Ottawa (VNA) - The Vietnam Ancestral Global Day was celebrated online in four major cities of Canada on April 11.

The event, organised by the Canada-Vietnam Society (CVS), took place simultaneously in Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver amid the complicated developments of the COVID-19 pandemic.

At the ceremony in Ottawa, CVS President Dang Trung Phuoc paid tribute to the legendary founders of the nation, pledging that Vietnamese people who are living in foreign countries will strive to uphold Vietnamese customs and language.

In Montreal, Dr Nguyen Van Hoang called on the Vietnamese community in Canada to support health workers engaging in the COVID-19 fight at home.

A seminar was held afterwards to inform the expats of the Canadian and Vietnamese governments’ support policies at present.

According to the State Committee on Overseas Vietnamese Affairs, there are about 4.5 million Vietnamese living across the globe, of which 250,000 are in Canada.

Founded in 2015, the Vietnam Ancestral Global Day non-profit socio-cultural project aims to strengthen the great national unity and promote Vietnam’s intangible cultural heritage of humanity to the globe.

Particularly in 2018, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc signed a decision supporting the continuous implementation of the event in countries with large Vietnamese communities.

The commemoration of Hung Kings – the legendary nation founders - is annually observed on the 10th day of the third lunar month. This year, it will fall on April 2.

The ritual was recognisedꦓ by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2012./.
