Vietnam asks Malaysia to arrange consular visit to detained fishermen

The Foreign Ministry has asked Malaysia to help the Vietnamese Embassy arrange a consular visit to a group of Vietnamese fishermen detained in the country, to gain further information and take the necessary citizen protection measures, ministry spokesperson Le Thi Thu Hang said at a regular press conference in Hanoi on September 17.

Hanoi (VNA)ꦕ - The Foreign Ministry has asked Malaysia to help the Vietnamese Embassyarrange a consular visit to a group of Vietnamese fishermen detained in the country,to gain further information and take the necessary citizen protection measures,ministry spokesperson Le Thi Thu Hang said at a regular press conference inHanoi on September 17.

In response toreporters’ questions regarding the detention of the 18 Vietnamese fishermen inMalaysia, Hang said the incident on August 16 between Malaysia’s coast guardand two Vietnamese fishing vessels left one Vietnamese fisherman dead. She added that theForeign Ministry sent a diplomatic note to the Malaysian Embassy in Vietnamexpressing its profound concern over the serious incident. The ministry asked the Malaysianauthorities to investigate the case, strictly punish public service staffresponsible for the death of the Vietnamese fisherman, and prevent similar incidents from occurring. The ministry alsosuggested Malaysia soon help bring the body of the victim home, as his familywishes, and offer humanitarian treatment to the detained fishermen. Malaysia has yet toarrange any consular visit, however, and Vietnam is working to promote theprocess, she said./.
