Vietnam attends nuclear non-proliferation talks

Vietnam’s nuclear non-proliferation stance and its nuclear energy development for peaceful, socio-economic development purposes have drawn the attention of participants at an international workshop that opened in Jakarta, Indonesia, on June 6.

The workshop,entitled “The future of nuclear non-proliferation treaty: perspectivesof ASEAN” drew more than 60 scholars, researchers and representativesfrom state nuclear energy agencies and relevant organisations of ASEANand foreign embassies in Indonesia .

Cao Hong Lamfrom the Vietnam Atomic Energy Institute said that Vietnam hadadopted a strategy on peaceful use of nuclear energy until 2020 and anational strategy on energy development until 2025 and its vision until2050.

Increasing fuel demands required Vietnam to develop nuclear energy to meet its economic growth, she said.

The potential to develop a network of nuclear power plants in Vietnam also drew attention at the workshop.

At the two-day event, the delegates discussed the period to review the2010-2015 nuclear non-proliferation treaty, nuclear safety and physicalprotection of nuclear materials, civil utilisation of nucleartechnology in the wake of the Fukushima nuclear disaster and theSoutheast Asia nuclear non-proliferation treaty and overview of nucleardisarmament and non-proliferation treaty./.
