New York (VNA) – Vietnam has for the first time become amember of the United NationsCommission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL), singing up fora six-year term.
The Southeast Asian country won 157 out of 193 votes atan election during the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly inNew York, the US, on December 17.
Vietnam and eight other Asia-Pacific countries ran forseven membership vacancies this year. This is the first time that Vietnam has stoodas a candidate for the position.
UNCITRAL,established by the General Assembly in 1966, is the corelegal body of the United Nations in international trade law and aims to removelegal obstacles to international trade.
The success in the election shows the country’s rising internationalprestige, and is recognition of the country’s efforts and contributions to thecommon tasks of the international community.
Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, head of Vietnam's Permanent Mission to the UN, said that Vietnam’s UNCITRAL membership candidacy was motivated bythe country’s external policy of active international integration, enhancing multilateralforeign relations and engaging in international law development.
Vietnam’s membership of the commission marks a stepforwards in the country’s international integration, especially in multilaterallegal integration, while realising the country’s policy of helping build andshape common rules at international level and within the UN framework, he said.
Over the years, Vietnam has joined variousinternational conventions and applied many model laws, guidelines andregulations in international trade, including arbitration rules built withinthe UNCITRAL framework, noted the diplomat, adding that thecountry urgently needs to complete its trade laws to implement bilateral andmultilateral trade and investment deals, including the Comprehensive and ProgressiveAgreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).
Vietnam’s joining the UNCITRALwill also help the country harmonise national trade laws, thus reducingobstacles in settling disputes and strengthening international trade forsustainable growth, he stated.-VNA
Vietnam has recorded substantive improvement of its stature since it became a member of the United Nations (UN) four decades ago, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh affirmed in an interview posted on the Government web portal.
Vietnam and the United Nations (UN) have spared no effort to nurture their cooperative ties over the past four decades, thus achieving remarkable results, President Tran Dai Quang said in a press interview on the 40th anniversary of Vietnam’s UN membership.

The country is willing to participate in collective efforts to promote cooperation and mobilise resources to advance the current priority issues of developing countries, such as trade, investment, infrastructure connectivity, making the most of scientific and technological advances for development, and people-to-people exchanges, Hang said.
During the negotiations, the US highly evaluated Vietnam’s goodwill and efforts, affirmed its appreciation for the bilateral relationship, acknowledged Vietnam’s proposals and concerns, and considered these an important basis for continuing discussions and moving towards a final agreement.
