Vietnam boosts protection of near-extinct pheasant

Vietnam will take drastic measures to protect the white-crest pheasant, an unique type of bird indigenous to Vietnam facing imminent extinction, with the intent to fully recover the species by 2030.

The target was reached during a round table discussion betweenwildlife experts and forest ranger forces from across the nation, heldin central Quang Binh province on April 16.

Participating consortiums outlined four protective measures, includingmobilising necessary resources; conducting relevant in-depth researchstudies; building well-managed and protected habitats for the bird; andbreeding.

Scientific documents showed that theendangered bird previously inhabited the four central provinces of HaTinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri and Thua Thien-Hue. The species was lastknown to be seen in the wild in 2000; their rapid disappearance was duelargely to habitat loss and hunting.-VNA

In 2019, Quang Ninh became one of the first localities in Vietnam to launch a province-wide campaign against plastic waste, mobilising the participation of the political system, the business sector, and the general public.
