Vietnam has proactively expanded its cooperation with other countriesand international organisations in preserving and upholding values ofUNESCO-recognised heritage pieces, a representative of the UnitedNations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) hassaid.
Katherine Muller-Marine, ChiefRepresentative of the UNESCO office in Vietnam added that in recentyears, the organisation has also intensified its cooperation with thecountry by providing financial assistance and training staff tasked withpreservation duties.
Vietnam has joined manyinternational conventions related to the preservation of cultural andnatural heritage. As a member of the World Heritage Committee since2013, the country has also led an initiative forming a network toconnect the world’s heritage sites with its biosphere reserves andnational parks.
Dang Van Bai, Vice Chairman ofthe Vietnam Cultural Heritage Association, said the country boasts manyexperienced experts on maintaining heritage pieces, which has beenillustrated through the effectiveness of the preservation in the HueImperial Citadel and Hoi An ancient town.
However, he noted, Vietnam is short of finance for the work sinceconservation activities requires a large sum of money. Meanwhile, adearth of professional and foreign language skills of the personnelalong with an influx of visitors to recognised heritage sites is alsodeemed as problematic.
Muller-Marine said likemany other countries, Vietnam is facing the question of how to preserveheritage pieces while making use of their value, for example throughdeveloping tourism.
To deal with such aquandrum, she suggested the country protect heritage even before it isofficially recognised as an international treasure.
