Vietnam defeats Malaysia 2-0 in AFF Suzuki Cup’s Group A

Vietnam beat Malaysia 2-0 in a Group A match of the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup 2018, which took place at Hanoi-based My Dinh National Stadium on November 16 evening.

Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam beat Malaysia2-0 in a Group A match of the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup 2018,which took place at Hanoi-based My Dinh National Stadium on November 16evening.

Korean head coach Park Hang-seo made a slightchange in Vietnam’s line-up compared to the previous match against Laos asdefender Que Ngoc Hai (Number 3) was the team captain instead of Nguyen VanQuyet.

At the 11th minute from the whistle, strikerNguyen Cong Phuong (Number 14) gave the home side the lead with a back heeltouch. Phuong also opened the score for Vietnam in its match against Laos onNovember 8.

Malaysia proved itself a tough opponent forVietnam as it increased attacks afterwards and earned higher ball possession inthe match.

At the 58th minute, goalkeeper Dang Van Lam hada great save to stop a dangerous free kick from the Malaysian side. 

Two minutes later, striker Nguyen Anh Duc(Number 11) doubled the score for Vietnam with a tidy finish from a pass ofmidfielder Phan Van Duc, bringing joy for the home spectators.

The Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) has workedwith the Hanoi Police and My Dinh Stadium’s organising board to ensure securityfor the match. The organising board will prevent fans from bringing flares intothe stadium.

On November 8, Vietnam beat Laos 3-0 in itsfirst match of Group A, with goals by Cong Phuong, Anh Duc and Nguyen QuangHai. Meanwhile, Malaysia previously defeated Laos and Cambodia. 

The AFF Suzuki Cup 2018 is taking place fromNovember 8 to December 15 with 26 matches among 10 teams. Vietnam’s national footballteam is in Group A together with fellow South East Asian teams, Malaysia,Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos.

This year, the AFF Suzuki Cup will feature a newplaying format, with both home and away ties. Vietnam will play Myanmar onNovember 20 and face Cambodia four days later.

In the tournament’s history, Vietnam won thechampionship just once in 2008. With the leadership of coach Park Hang-seo andthe current squad, both Vietnamese and Korean football fans are hopeful theS-shaped country’s team will take the trophy for the second time after 10 yearsawaiting.-VNA
