Phnom Penh (VNA) – The Vietnam CashewAssociation (Vinacas) will help Cambodian agriculture sector increase cashewoutput to 1 million tonnes in the next decade.
An agreement to this effect was signed by Vinacas ChairmanNguyen Duc Thanh and Cambodian Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and FisheriesVeng Sakhon in Phnom Penh on January 17, under which both sides will work to increasecashew cultivation acreage and output, transfer technology, access markets andstudy and develop cashew trees in 10 Cambodian provinces.
Vinacas will also mobilise funding and technology from itsmembers in the effort, towards mitigating post-harvest loss and increasecashew’s added value in the country.
Cambodia is now home to over 100,000 ha of cashew trees witha total output of more than 100,000 tonnes, most of them are sold to Vietnam.With abundant land, the country is looking to grow 500,000 – 600,000 hectares ofcashew to reach targeted output.
At a reception for the Vinacas delegation, VietnameseAmbassador to Cambodia Vu Quang Minh spoke highly of the project, contributingto strengthening traditional friendship between the two governments andpeoples.-VNA
Vietnam’s cashew export in 2017 is hoped to reach 3 billion USD, an increase of 160 million USD from 2016, according to the Vietnam Cashew Association (VINACAS).
