Vietnam, ILO sign cooperation pact on sustainable employment

Hanoi (VNA) – A national cooperation programme on sustainable employment for 2017-2021between Vietnam and the International Labour Organisation (ILO) was signed inHanoi on December 5.

The five-yearprogramme, the third of its kind since 1992, priorities will be given to povertyreduction by expanding social welfare coverage for all and building a workingenvironment that offers sustainable business opportunities.

It also aims toreduce unacceptable forms of employment, especially for vulnerable people, anddesign an effective workforce management mechanism that respects basicprinciples and rights in labour.

Speaking at thesigning ceremony, Minister of Labour, War Invalids and Social Affairs Dao NgocDung said Vietnam will continue paying heed to employment, human resourcesdevelopment and social security as part of the nation’s international economicintegration progress in line with its sustainable growth strategy.

Dung proposedthe ILO and involved partners to build an action plan for the programme.

He also expectedthat the ILO will assist Vietnam in reforming social insurance and wage policiesand improving international integration capacity.

ILO Vietnam DirectorChang-Hee Lee said the 2017-2021 programme should shift focus from resources toknowledge, with assistance offered simultaneously to the Government, employeesand employers at the local level to boost their capacity in preparation forsustainable changes. 

The ILO iscommitted to joining hands with its partners to achieve common goals, hestressed.

In 1994, the ILOhelped Vietnam build the labour law when the country was in need of a new legalframework to monitor its workforce.-VNA
