Vietnam, Indonesia back transition process in Sudan

Hanoi (VNA) – Ambassador Dian Triansyah Djani, head of Indonesia’spermanent mission to the UN, affirmed Indonesia and Vietnam back the transitionprocess in Sudan, when delivering a joint speech of the two countries at the UNSecurity Council briefing on Sudan situation and operations of the UNIntegrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS) on December 8.
Indonesia and Vietnam acknowledge challenges on economicsand humanity facing Sudan in general and Darfur in particular, and call on theinternational community to facilitate Sudan’s access to international financialaid, Djani stated.
The two countries appreciate the role of the African Union(AU) and nations in the region in promoting peace and stability in Sudan, andhope that the transition process from the AU/UN Hybrid Operation in Darfur(UNAMID) to UNITAMS will ensure the maintenance of gained achievements, forlong-term peace and development in Sudan.
Rapporteurs at the virtual briefing gave updates on newdevelopments in Sudan, particularly the signing in October of a milestone peaceagreement between the Government and two armed movements from Darfur.
UNSC members called on parties involved in Sudan to speed upthe transition process in conformity with the peace agreement.
They expressed hope that UNITAMS will be soon put intooperation and contribute actively to the transition process in the Africancountry.
UNITAMS was set up following the UNSC Resolution 2525approved in June. It aims at assisting Sudan’s political transition, supportingpeace processes and implementation of future peace agreements, assistingpeacebuilding, civilian protection and rule of law in Darfur and the Two Areas ofSouth Kordofan and Blue Nile, and supporting the mobilisation of economic anddevelopment assistance and coordination of humanitarian assistance.
Set up on July 31, 2007, UNAMID was tasked with protectingcivilians, facilitating humanitarian activities in Darfur and assistingnegotiations between the Government and armed groups in Darfur. UNAMID isscheduled to stop operations on December 31./.
