Vietnam, Japan cooperate in environmental technologies

Hanoi (VNA) –
Vietnamese and Japanese businesses presented airpollution control technologies and technological applications for waste andwaste water management at a workshop in Hanoi on January 10.

The participants also talked about cooperation towards low-carbon growth,environmental technologies, sustainable development, environmentalinfrastructure for developing countries, and partnerships between Vietnameseand Japanese cities.

Speaking at the event, Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Natural Resources andEnvironment Vo Tuan Nhan said Vietnam urgently needs to consolidate the harmonybetween environmental protection and socio-economic development. Gearingtowards sustainable development remains a key challenge for policymakers andenforcement forces in the field of natural resources management andenvironmental protection, he said.

Highlighting the intensive and extensive relationship between Vietnam and Japanacross all spheres, Nhan said Japan is one of Vietnam’s most importantstrategic partners in environmental protection.

Vietnam hopes that environmental research and State management agencies,environmental protection associations, and businesses of the two countries willexchange information and management experience, promote technological transfer,and promote feasible and specific cooperation projects.

The collaboration would serve as a foundation for the formation of an environmentaltechnologies market and environmental industry in Vietnam, with the activeparticipation of Japanese partners and businesses, he said.

Japanese Vice Minister of the Environment Takaaki Katsumata saidVietnam and Japan celebrated the 45th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic tiesand cooperated well in many fields in 2018, including the environmental sector.

The Vietnamese Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and the JapaneseMinistry of Environment inked a cooperation agreement in 2013 and reaped the outcomesin different fields, he said.

Many Japanese companies specialising in waste treatment are operating inVietnam, he said, describing the workshop as an opportunity for the Vietnameseside to learn about Japan’s demands in this regard, he said. –VNA

Viet𝔉nam ramps up plastic waste recycling, reuse, treatment efforts𒆙

In 2019, Quang Ninh became one of the first localities in Vietnam to launch a province-wide campaign against plastic waste, mobilising the participation of the political system, the business sector, and the general public. Other localities—such as Hai Phong, Da Nang, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City—have also effectively implemented waste-sorting initiatives at source, along with models for plastic-free markets and urban areas.
