Hanoi (VNA) - Sen. Lieut. Gen. Nguyen ChiVinh, Deputy Minister of National Defence, on June 10 held phone talks with hisJapanese counterpart Nishida Yasumori.
The call was to continue promoting defence cooperation activities betweenVietnam and Japan after the COVID-19 pandemic is controlled. The two sides alsoshared information about their disease prevention and fight as well as discussedthe regional and global issues of mutual concern.
Sharing the COVID-19situation in Vietnam, Vinh said that Vietnam’s success in disease control wasthanks to the engagement of the whole political system, the drastic directionof the Government, as well as the participation of all ministries, agencies andlocalities, with the army playing an important and active role.
Hestated that Vietnam highly values the achievements of Japan, with the role andcontribution of the Ministry of Defence, in COVID-19 prevention and control, aswell as the international cooperation spirit of Japan in the sharing ofinformation and experience in dealing with the pandemic, and its support for othercountries.
As the fight against COVID-19 is still long and complicated, the Vietnamese Ministryof National Defence wishes to continue cooperation, support and experiencesharing with its Japanese counterpart, he stressed
After the disease is completely controlled, the Vietnamese ministry is ready tojoin its Japanese counterpart in implementing the cooperation plan for 2020with such agreed contents as exchange of high-level delegations, cooperation atmultilateral forums, participating in UN peacekeeping operations, overcoming warconsequences, training personnel, and military medicine.
Forhis part, Nishida Yasumori appreciated Vietnam's efforts, especially thecontributions of the Vietnam People's Army to the COVID-19 fight, consideringit valuable experience for many countries in dealing with similar epidemics aswell as other non-traditional security challenges.
Heaffirmed that Japan is ready to cooperate and share experience in combating COVID-19with Vietnam and will quickly deploy defence cooperation activities that thetwo sides agreed right after the pandemic is contained.
Japan supports Vietnam to successfully organise activities in the year it servesas ASEAN Chair, including activities within the ASEAN Defence Minister’sMeeting Plus (ADMM ), he noted.
At the phone talks,the two sides also exchanged views on the regional and global matters of mutualinterest. According to the Japanese Deputy Defence Minister, recently therehave been a number of actions that caused tensions and complicated thesituation in the East Sea. Japan resolutely opposes these actions.
Vinhaffirmed Vietnam's consistent view that disputes and disagreements must beresolved peacefully, on the basis of international law, including the 1982United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS 1982) and regionaltreaties./.
