Vietnam learns from int’l experience in marine spatial planning

Hanoi (VNA) – Experts shared experience in maꦐrไine spatial planning and oceangovernance at the second annual conference of the IntergovernmentalOceanographic Commission (IOC) in the Asia-Pacific, which opened in Hanoi onFebruary 18.

In his remarks,Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Tran Quy Kiensaid that as a coastal country, Vietnam has made use of the integrated,ecosystem-based method in sea and island management. He cited the country’srelevant policies and laws such as the 2012 Maritime Law, the 2015 Law on Seaand Island Natural Resources and Environment, the 2014 Environmental ProtectionLaw, the 2017 Planning Law, and Resolution No. 36-NQ/TW on the strategy for sustainabledevelopment of Vietnam’s marine economy to 2030 with a vision towards 2045 adoptedat the eighth plenum of the 12th Party Central Committee on October 22, 2018. These documents areessential to sea and island management in Vietnam, creating a foundation forthe successful implementation of the sustainable development policy for Vietnam’smarine economy until 2030 with a vision towards 2045, the official said.

As a responsible memberof the IOC, Vietnam has been actively realising the commission’s initiativesfor marine spatial planning through various activities, he noted.

Kien emphasised the need for Vietnam to 🅰learn from experience of foreigncountries, especially those in the Asia-Pacific, in marine spatial planning andocean governance with an integrated, ecosystem-based approach.

Vietnam pioneers use of 𝓰AI and remote sensing to monitor seawater quality

According to Dr. Vu Anh Tuan, Deputy Director General of the Vietnam Space Centre and head of the project, this is the first study in Vietnam to simultaneously employ Sentinel-2 satellite data, advanced machine learning algorithms, and the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud computing platform to model and monitor key seawater quality parameters.

Vietnam ramps up plastic waste recycling, reuse, 🉐treatment efforts

In 2019, Quang Ninh became one of the first localities in Vietnam to launch a province-wide campaign against plastic waste, mobilising the participation of the political system, the business sector, and the general public. Other localities—such as Hai Phong, Da Nang, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City—have also effectively implemented waste-sorting initiatives at source, along with models for plastic-free markets and urban areas.
