Vietnam, Myanmar hold seventh political consultation

The Foreign Ministries of Vietnam and Myanmar held their seventh political consultation in the Myanmar capital city of Nay Pyi Taw on May 29.

Nay Pyi Taw (VNA) – The ForeignMinistries of Vietnam and Myanmar held their seventh political consultation inthe Myanmar capital city of Nay Pyi Taw on May 29. 

The Vietnamese delegation to the function wasled by Deputy Foreign Minister Dang Dinh Quy while the Myanmar delegation washeaded by Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Kyaw Tin. 

The two sides briefed each other on therespective situations, reviewed their cooperation, and discussed measures andorientations to push up the traditional friendship between the two countriesand the two ministries.  

They commented on the fruitful relationship andbilaterally and multilaterally close coordination, at regional and internationalforums. 

They agreed to reinforce the exchange ofall-level delegations and citizens and effectively implement cooperationmechanisms, especially through the organisation of a meeting of the bilateralcooperation committee in 2017. 

At the same time, the two sides will expandtheir collaboration in such areas as national defence, security, trade andinvestment. 

They put on the table regional and internationalissues of shared concern and agreed to tighten their coordination in theAssociation of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the UN and other regionalcooperation mechanisms. 

It is necessary to enhance solidarity andconsistency within ASEAN in order to bring into full play the bloc’scentrality, they said. 

Regarding the East Sea issue, the two sidesconsented to handle disputes in the area by peaceful measures and in line withinternational law. 

They affirmed their resolve to work togetherwith other ASEAN member countries and China to soon finalise an effective andlegally binding Code of Conduct in the East Sea (COC).

The eighth political consultation was set totake place in Vietnam in 2018. 

On this occasion, Quy paid a courtesy visit toMyanmar's State Counsellor and Minister for Foreign Affairs Aung San Suu Kyiwho applauded Vietnam’s socio-economic achievements and pledged to do herutmost to advance the bilateral relationship to the next level and in a morecomprehensive manner. -VNA
