Vietnam proposes disaster risk reduction measures to UN

Hanoi (VNA) – AVietnamese representative stressed three measures to reduce disaster risks andcope with climate change based on Vietnam’s practical experience as a countryfacing frequent natural disasters at a plenary meeting on sustainabledevelopment of the UN Economic and Financial Committee (Second Committee) inNew York on October 9.
Ngo GiaThuan, FirstSecretary of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations, said theissue must be dealt with in relation with the overall implementation of plansserving sustainable growth goals, and through interaction with other arenassuch as science-technology development and gender equality.
The diplomat continued tosay that there is a need for further development assistance to help low- andmiddle-income nations which are vulnerable to disasters improve theirresilience capacity.
Disaster risk reductionresponsibilities should be shared among involved units in both the public andprivate sectors, he added.
According to Thuan, Vietnamhas been proactive in responding to climate change with support from UN bodies.
Vietnam has boosted publicawareness of the matter, included the prevention of disaster risks in its legalsystem, and established a committee and a national strategy on climate change,he noted.
At the meeting, on behalfof ASEAN, the Philippines stressed the bloc’s inner and internationalcooperation in climate change adaptation and reiterated its commitment to theParis Agreement.
The Philippines called foradvanced countries which support the climate accord to assist the SoutheastAsian region in building low-carbon and climate-change-resilientcities.-VNA
