Vietnam responds to global road safety week

The Ministry of Transportation (MoT) held a ceremony to launch a programme in response to the UN Global Road Safety Week themed “Children and road safety” on May 4 in Hanoi.
The Ministry of Transportation (MoT) held a ceremony to launch aprogramme in response to the UN Global Road Safety Week themed “Childrenand road safety” on May 4 in Hanoi.

The programme wasco-organised by the Asia Injury Prevention Foundation (AIPF) and theWorld Health Organisation (WHO).

From May 4 to 10,information on typical traffic crash causes and their effects onchildren will be disseminated across the country to raise communityawareness of the need to protect children, said an official from theMoT.

The programme urges children to wear helmets and abide by traffic laws.

According to WHO statistics, more than 1.24 million people are killedin traffic accidents globally each year. In Vietnam , around 2,000children die annually in road traffic accidents, mostly due to notwearing helmets.

Also on the occasion, the MoT provided 400 helmets for students at the Tan Dinh secondary school in Hanoi.-VNA
