The environment ministers of Vietnam and the Republic of Korea (RoK) agreed at their talks in Jeju, the RoK, on October 22 to cooperate in conducting research on biodiversity preservation and the use of natural resources in Vietnam.

In the witness of the two ministers, the Vietnam Environment Administration under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MoNRE) and the National Institute of Biological Resource under the RoK’s Ministry of Environment signed a Memorandum of Understanding for joint research on biological resources.

MoNRE Minister Nguyen Minh Quang and Minister of Environment Yun Seong-kyu also discussed ways to build capacity for Vietnamese environmental officials through short-term or long-term trainings and online information-sharing systems.

They shared thoughts on investment plans by RoK enterprises in the fields of the environment and natural resources.

The two ministers reached consensus on developing joint projects using the Green Climate Fund and an automatic water quality measuring system for Vietnam.

Before their meeting, the two ministers toured the electricity-charging system for electric cars, a smart electricity grid and wind power farms on Jeju Island.

The meeting this year is the 12th of this kind between the environmental ministers of the two countries since 2000.

♋ Vietnam ramps up plastic waste recycling, reuse, treatment efforts

In 2019, Quang Ninh became one of the first localities in Vietnam to launch a province-wide campaign against plastic waste, mobilising the participation of the political system, the business sector, and the general public. Other localities—such as Hai Phong, Da Nang, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City—have also effectively implemented waste-sorting initiatives at source, along with models for plastic-free markets and urban areas.
