Vietnam targets 20 medals at Asian Indoor Games

Vietnam, this year's host of the third Asian Indoor Games (AIG 3), aims to finish in the top eight of the competing countries, an official said on Aug. 24.
Vietnam, this year's host of the thirdAsian Indoor Games (AIG 3), aims to finish in the top eight of thecompeting countries, the general secretary of Vietnam ’s OlympicCommittee said on Aug. 24.

Hoang Vinh Giang, who is also vice head of the AIG3’s organisingcommittee, said the country was capable of winning 15-20 medals.

Giang, who is also vice chairman of the Olympic Council of Asia, saidVietnam was expected to bring home gold medals in Vovinam,billiards&snooker, Chinese chess, sepak takraw, wushu, Pencak Silatand shuttlecock.

The AIG 3 will open at Hanoi ’s 40,000-seat My Dinh National Stadium onOctober 30, and close at the Hanoi ’s Quan Ngua Sports Centre onNovember 8.

The games, which sports the motto For a Rising Asia and a song calledThe Torch of Peace, feature 20 sports and one demonstration sport.

Hanoi will organise 10 sports – dance sport, athletics, aquatic sports,(short course swimming and finswimming), whushu, sepak takraw, kabaddi,pentaque, e-Sport, kurash (central Asian wrestling), shuttlecockkicking, - and one demonstration sport Jujitsu and beltwrestling.

The remaining 10 sports will be held in HCM City , Hai Phong, Hai Duong, Quang Ninh and Bac Ninh.

Forty-one countries and territories and 4,000 athletes have registered for the event.

The teams with the largest number of participants include Iran (537), Thailand (420), India (348) and China (300).

The heads of participating delegations will meet in Hanoi and HCM Cityon Aug. 29 to resolve outstanding issues related to the games. TruongTan Phong, secretary of HCM City ’s AIG 3’s organising committee, saidthat gymnasium upgrades in the city would be completed by September 30.

Following the pre-games Muay Thai competition, a pregames three-a-sidebasketball championship with five participating countries, China,Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam, will beheld on September 25-30 in Lanh Binh Thang Gymnasium in HCM City. Afutsal (indoor football) competition will also be organised in October./.
