Hanoi (VNA) – The Prime Minister has approved the creation of the national greenhouse gas (GHG) i𝐆nventory system (NGHGIS), 🌞which will begin operation from 2016.

The system aims to create a legal foundation for GHG inventory accounting in Vietnam and enforce Vietnam’s current regulations relating to climate change response, meeting the requirements and obligations of a member country of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MoNRE) will be the coordinating agency for the system and will be responsible for organising GHG inventory tasks as part of the creation of national reports on climate change. The ministry will also ensure the role of the steering committee for the implementation of the UNFCCC and the Kyoto Protocol in the assessment and approval of national reports on climate change, including periodical GHG inventory. The Ministry of Planning and Investment (MoPI) will coordinate with the MoNRE to guide ministries and sectors, People’s Committees of provinces and centrally-governed cities and related enterprises in providing data and relevant information for compiling GHG inventory every two years. The MoPI will be responsible for summing up and providing relevant data and information for the coordinating agency of the NGHGIS every two years.
The NGHGIS’s working plan for 2016-2020 includes reviewing and revising policies and documents relating to the GHG inventory; completing the GHG inventory and creating technical reports on GHG inventory for the base years of 2014 and 2016. The plan also includes the development of a database on GHG inventory and assessment of the effectiveness of the NGHGIS. After 2020, the NGHGIS will be completed and the management and supervision of GHG emission will be strengthened. The system will measure, verify and report the country’s GHG emission reduction to serve the implementation of Vietnam’s Intended Nationally Determined Contribution for the UNFCCC.-VNA

Vietnam ramps up plastic waste recycl🗹ing, ༺reuse, treatment efforts

In 2019, Quang Ninh became one of the first localities in Vietnam to launch a province-wide campaign against plastic waste, mobilising the participation of the political system, the business sector, and the general public. Other localities—such as Hai Phong, Da Nang, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City—have also effectively implemented waste-sorting initiatives at source, along with models for plastic-free markets and urban areas.
