Vietnam to have national water resource monitoring system by 2030

Vietnam has set a goal of building and maintaining a national water resource monitoring system and another system to forecast flooding, drought, saltwater intrusion and rising sea water level by 2030.

Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam has set a goal of buildingand maintaining a national water resource monitoring system and another systemto forecast flooding, drought, saltwater intrusion and rising sea water levelby 2030.

It was set in the master plan on basic investigation onwater resources till 2030 with a vision to 2050, which has recently beenapproved by the Government.

As part of the planning, Vietnam will also put into operationa system to monitor and coordinate the operation of all reservoirs in 11 river basins,and another monitoring the exploitation and use of water and discharge ofwastewater into water resources.

By 2030, Vietnam will strive to complete investigation and assessmentof underground water resources; seek and discover underground water sources; zoneoff and announce areas where exploitation of underground water is restricted nationwide;review the pollution, degradation and depletion and salinisation of waterresources; and forecast the impacts of climate change on water resource.

ꦗ The planning also comprises the building of mechanisms tomanage and allocate capital to basic investigations on water resources, and theresearch and application of selected modern technical tools for investigations.It will also propose mechanisms to encourage individuals and organisations to providepublic services in the field under public-private partnership model./.

♔ Vietnam pioneers use of AI and remote sensing to monitor seawater quality

According to Dr. Vu Anh Tuan, Deputy Director General of the Vietnam Space Centre and head of the project, this is the first study in Vietnam to simultaneously employ Sentinel-2 satellite data, advanced machine learning algorithms, and the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud computing platform to model and monitor key seawater quality parameters.

In 2019, Quang Ninh became one of the first localities in Vietnam to launch a province-wide campaign against plastic waste, mobilising the participation of the political system, the business sector, and the general public. Other localities—such as Hai Phong, Da Nang, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City—have also effectively implemented waste-sorting initiatives at source, along with models for plastic-free markets and urban areas.
