Vietnam to participate in Asian Winter Games

Hanoi (VNA) - Vietnamwill take part in the Asian Winter Games in Sapporo and Obihiro, Japan, inFebruary.

It will be the firsttime that Vietnamese athletes will compete in the games, which is one of twobiggest sporting events in the continent.

It is scheduled that Vietnamwill compete in skiing and the sport leaders have opened the doors to theoverseas Vietnamese to join the national team for the Sapporo event.

The eighth Games willhave 11 sports with 64 events to be organised between February 19 and February22.

The first Games held in1986, also in Sapporo, was small in scale and attended only by representativesfrom East Asian regions where winter sports were already relatively well-known.

Today, the Games havedeveloped into a large-scale sporting meet attended by athletes from countriesand regions across Asia, and have produced significant results toward achievingthe Olympic Council of Asia’s goal of developing winter sports in Asia.-VNA

ꦰ Vietnam re-elected to 2005 UNESCO Convention’s Intergovernmental Committee

This is the first time since the adoption of the Convention that a country has served two consecutive terms on the Committee.
