Vietnam, US enhance cooperation in wildlife protection

Vietnam and the US will work closely to fight illegal wildlife trading, according to Secretary of the US Department of the Interior Sally Jewell.

During a meeting with the media inHanoi on June 30, part of activities during her visit to Vietnam fromJune 29-July 1, she called for enhanced law enforcement andinternational cooperation in dealing with the increased smuggling ofendangered species including elephants, rhinos, sea turtles, tigers andpangolins.

The Secretary stressed the need forpublicity campaigns to raise awareness across the world, such as hercountry’s destruction of one tonne of elephant tusks in Times Square inNew York among events with celebrity participation.

She also hailed the contributions Vietnam and the US have made to thejoint efforts reflected by the respective legal frameworks andenforcement of wildlife laws.

During her stay,Secretary Jewell is scheduled to visit the Cuc Phuong National Park inthe northern province of Ninh Binh and other centres for protectingendangered species-VNA

Vietnam pioneers use of AI and rem🎃ote sensing to monitor seawater quality

According to Dr. Vu Anh Tuan, Deputy Director General of the Vietnam Space Centre and head of the project, this is the first study in Vietnam to simultaneously employ Sentinel-2 satellite data, advanced machine learning algorithms, and the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud computing platform to model and monitor key seawater quality parameters.

Vietnam ramps up plastic waste recycli🐭ng, reuse, treatment efforts

In 2019, Quang Ninh became one of the first localities in Vietnam to launch a province-wide campaign against plastic waste, mobilising the participation of the political system, the business sector, and the general public. Other localities—such as Hai Phong, Da Nang, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City—have also effectively implemented waste-sorting initiatives at source, along with models for plastic-free markets and urban areas.
