Vietnam, US launch first energy security dialogue

Hanoi (VNA) – Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Hoang Quoc Vuongand Sandra Oudkirk, Deputy Assistant Secretary at the Bureau of EnergyResources of the US co-chaired the first Vietnam-US Energy Security Dialogue inHanoi on March 30.

USAmbassador to Vietnam Daniel Kritenbrink said this is one of the five eventsthe US has held globally and expressed the US side’s wish to become a partnerof Vietnam in the energy security issue.

He stressed the need for countries to diversify energy sources when it is hardfor them to be self-sufficient in their energy demand today.

He also pointed to the need for countries to be connected and cooperate inorder to have a sustainable energy strategy. 

He affirmed that his country stands ready to share experience inmanagement measures, which cover prices, finance, distribution andenvironmental issues, with Vietnam.

Meanwhile, Deputy Minister Vuong stressed that the two countries have hugepotential for energy cooperation and the energy security dialogue is animportant step marking the development of the cooperative ties.

Leading energy groups from the US like ExxonMobi, Murphy Oil, Chevron and UOPhave all been present in Vietnam with a line-up of cooperative projects, Vuongsaid, adding that both sides should bolster collaboration in oil exploration,production and infrastructure development to serve energy import demand ofVietnam.

Vietnam has witnessed a growing need for energy for economic development. TheInstitute of Energy under the MoIT forecasts that demands for energy will increasefrom 54 million tonnes of oil equivalent to 90 million tonnes of oil equivalentby 2025.-VNA

Vietnam ramps up plastic waste recycling,𒈔 reuse, treatment efforts

In 2019, Quang Ninh became one of the first localities in Vietnam to launch a province-wide campaign against plastic waste, mobilising the participation of the political system, the business sector, and the general public. Other localities—such as Hai Phong, Da Nang, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City—have also effectively implemented waste-sorting initiatives at source, along with models for plastic-free markets and urban areas.
