Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam always pays attention tostrengthening friendship and cooperation with the Ivory Coast, its secondbiggest trade partner in Africa, stated Deputy Prime Minister and ForeignMinister Pham Binh Minh.
Minh made the statement at talks with Foreign Minister ofthe Ivory Coast Marcel Amon-Tanoh in Hanoi on June 18.
Expressing delight at his first official visit to Vietnam, Amon-Tanohcongratulated the Southeast Asian nation on its recent election to a non-permanentseat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2020 – 2021 tenure with arecord number of votes.
Both host and guest reached agreements on specific measuresto deepen bilateral relations and capitalise on the two nations’ strengths.Accordingly, in the coming time, Vietnam and the Ivory Coast will increase the exchangeof State and parliament delegations, and people-to-people exchanges.
Noting that bilateral trade grew rapidly in the past fiveyears to reach approximately 1 billion USD in 2018, the two officials saidtrade-investment promotion activities between the countries need to beencouraged for further breakthroughs in economic cooperation.
Amon-Tanoh asked for Vietnam’s assistance toward his countryin the areas of agriculture, telecommunications, and education-training. Hewelcomed Vietnamese firms to invest in the Ivory Coast.
Minh took the occasion to thank the Ivory Coast Governmentfor supporting Vietnamese expatriates in settling down in the host country,thus helping with bilateral economic exchanges.
The sides agreed to soon begin their negotiation for andsigning of documents to create the legal framework for the operation of theirenterprises such as agreements on framework cooperation; trade; investmentencouragement and protection; and double tax avoidance.
The officials also informed each other on current affairs oftheir respective nations and discussed international and regional issues ofcommon concern.
They affirmed their support for multilateral cooperation andhandling of disputes by peaceful measures in line with international law. Theyalso committed to increasing exchanges and coordination at multilateral forumslike the UN and International Organisation of La Francophonie.-VNA
A delegation of the Ivory Coast Government on March 27 visited the Thai Nguyen University of Education in the northern province of Thai Nguyen to study the university’s experience in training teachers as well as its education-training strategy amidst international integration.

During the negotiations, the US highly evaluated Vietnam’s goodwill and efforts, affirmed its appreciation for the bilateral relationship, acknowledged Vietnam’s proposals and concerns, and considered these an important basis for continuing discussions and moving towards a final agreement.
The Chairman stressed the need for stricter fiscal discipline, faster digital transformation, and more efficient management of State budget revenues and expenditures.
