Vietnam welcomes talks between government and opposition in Syria
Vietnam has welcomed the talks between the Government of Syria and the opposition in the framework of the Constitutional Committee to seek similarities at the end of last August, and stressed the significance of maintaining constructive talks and negotiations.

New York (VNA) – Vietnam has welcomed thetalks between the Government of Syria and the opposition in the framework ofthe Constitutional Committee to seek similarities at the end of last August,and stressed the significance of maintaining constructive talks andnegotiations.
Speaking at the UN Security Council’s videoconferencemeeting on the Syrian situation on September 18, Ambassador Pham Hai Anh,deputy head of the Vietnamese mission to the UN, held that the only solution topeace and stability in Syria is political settlement led and owned by Syrianpeople in line with international law on the foundation of respecting thesovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria.
The ambassador underlined the need to maintain security andlong-term stability to serve the talks, as well as to promote diplomaticefforts to support the political process and maintain assistance to Syria todeal with socio-economic and humanitarian challenges and COVID-19 pandemic.
At the event, UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for SyriaGeir Pederson said that the third round of discussions of theConstitutional Committee, held in August in Geneva, had revealed thepossibility to find some common ground between the sides.
However, he said that there were still substantial differencesamong the sides regarding outstanding problems, stressing the need to earlyreach agreement on the agenda for the next session, which is slated for early October.
He pledged to work hard to help the parties during theprocess, and called for the continuous support of the international community,especially Russia and the US, for the diplomatic pathways for implementation ofResolution 2254 of the UN Security Council.
The UN-supported Syria Constitutional Committee was formedin September 2019 with an aim to promote negotiations for the adjustments ofthe Constitution on the foundation of the political process stated inResolution 2254. The committee comprises representatives from the Syriangovernment, opposition and socio-political organisations./.
The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on August 19 held a videoconference on the political situation in Syria during which the Vietnamese representative stressed the need to ensure security to promote political solutions in the country in line with the UNSC’s Resolution 2254.
