Kuala Lumpur (VNA) –🍃 Vietnam can serve as a mediator within ASEAN when conflicting views emerge, Prof. Ruhanas Harun from the Department of International Relations under the National Defence University of Malaysia (UPNM) has said.

In an interview with the Vietnam News Agency’s correspondents in Kuala Lumpur, Ruhanas mentioned Vietnam’s growing role and development prospects within ASEAN, especially amid increasingly complex geopolitical dynamics in the region and the world, stressing that Vietnam is the most prominent among the newer ASEAN members, maintaining particularly close ties with Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar. The expert said she believes that Vietnam can serve as a mediator and bridge-builder, helping ASEAN member states see the benefits of joining the bloc and the support it offers. She also highlighted Vietnam’s bridging role within the group thanks to its history and close ties with Eastern European countries, including Russia, as well as with China. According to Ruhanas, in the new era, like other ASEAN member states and nations around the world, Vietnam must take into account geopolitical, geo-strategic and geo-economic aspects. Meanwhile, ASEAN member nations are adjusting their foreign, socio-economic, and defence policies to safeguard national security and ensure state survival amid emerging threats.
In this context, Vietnam in particular and ASEAN in general continue to uphold three core principles of consultation, consensus, and non-interference in each other's internal affairs, she said. Regarding ASEAN’s role in the region, the expert affirmed that the bloc continues to play a central and crucial role in regional affairs, stressing that ASEAN has actively and seriously contributed to maintaining stability, security, and prosperity in the region. She suggested that ASEAN should maintain its vision and distinct identity as a regional organisation that upholds neutrality, refrains from taking sides, fosters good relations with all major powers, and works toward resolving disputes in the region through peaceful measures.
Looking ahead to ASEAN Vision 2045, Ruhanas expressed confidence that this ambitious 20-year plan is achievable, aiming to build a dynamic, innovative, and people-centred ASEAN. To achieve that goal, ASEAN member states need to strengthen engagement through tourism, cultural and social exchanges, and higher education, she said, adding that the bloc also needs to raise public awareness so that people in each member country understand and support this vision. She showed her belief that with its reputable diplomatic standing, rich and diverse culture, and the resilience and dynamism of its people, Vietnam can share valuable lessons and experiences with other member states and continue making practical contributions to the bloc in the future./.
