Vietnam world’s fourth biggest seafood exporter

Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam now ranks fourth globally,first in Southeast Asia and second in Asia in terms of exports of seafood, andits products are now available in over 170 countries and territories worldwide.

The information was released by Deputy Director General ofthe Directorate of Fisheries under the Ministry of Agriculture and RuralDevelopment Tran Dinh Luan during a press briefing in Hanoi on March 15 on the60th anniversary of the traditional day of the sector (April 1).

He said the sector is striving to raise the export value to10 billion USD this year, up over 11 percent.

To that end, it will continue restructuring production,effectively carrying out the national action plan and a comprehensive plan onthe development of the shrimp industry till 2025, he said.

According to him, the total aquatic output topped 7.4million tonnes last year, or a 5.6-fold increase from 1995. Meanwhile, farmingsurpassed 3.89 million tonnes, or a four-fold hike from 1995 while exports hita record of more than 9 billion USD.

Luan said the sector will hold a number of activities inHanoi and the northern province of Quang Ninh to celebrate the occasion in thenear future.

From March 30 – April 1, a fair and exhibition on theaquatic sector, a ceremony to release varieties to restore aquatic resources inthe Gulf of Tonkin, and a symposium reviewing the 15-year implementation of theVietnam – China fishery cooperation agreement in the Gulf are planned.

A ceremony celebrating the 60th anniversary ofthe aquatic sector’s traditional day will take place in Hanoi on March 29 tohonour generations of leaders and workers in the field, popularise aquaticproducts and expand markets, and broaden international cooperation in thefield.-VNA
