Vietnamese athletes claim two golds at Asian Weightlifting Championships

Vietnamese athletes have won two golds from the Asian Weightlifting Championships which is being held in China.

Hanoi (VNS/VNA) - Vietnamese athletes have won two golds from the Asian Weightlifting Championships which is being held in China.

Young lifter Tran Minh Tri successfully overcame eight other rivals to take one gold and two silvers in the men's 67kg category.

The competition featured Tri, Zheng Xinhao of China, Khusinboy Matrasulov of Uzbekistan and Bae Moonsu of the Republic of Korea vying for the top position.

Tri's 146kg lift in the snatch event brought him a silver while favourite Zheng Xinhao of the hosts took gold with 147kg. Matrasulov took bronze with 140kg.

Later Tri, a 32nd SEA Games champion, lifted 172kg in the clean & jerk to clinch silver while Bae made 174kg for gold and Zheng bagged bronze with 170kg.

In total, Tri's combined result of 318kg pushed him to the top podium with only 1kg better than Zheng on 317kg and Bae finished third with 306kg.

Earlier, Lai Gia Thanh won a gold for Vietnam in the men's 55kg snatch event with a lift of 120kg.

Wang Weidong of China came second with 119kg lift and Mansour Al Saleem of Saudi Arabia was third with 117kg.

Thanh also grabbed bronze in the clean & jerk lifting 140kg. He was below Wang who lifted 146kg and Fernando Jr Agad of the Philippines, who managed 141kg.

In total, Wang topped the podium with combined 265kg. Thanh was behind with 260kg and Al Saleem and Agad shared third place with a same result of 254kg.

Vietnam also earned three bronzes in the women's 45kg class by Nguyen Dinh Thi.

The Asian championships features 171 competitors from 26 countries and regions including eight of Vietnam. They compete in 10 weight categories each for men and women.

The championships will end on May 16./.
