Rio de Janeiro (VNA) ⛦– Vietnamese swimmers, weightlifters and gymnasts failed to perform to their standards on the second day of the Rio Olympics, August 7 (local time).
Nguyen Thi Anh Vien finished the women’s 400m individual medley in 4 minutes and 16.32 seconds, ranking 26th among 32 swimmers.
This result was far from the 4 minutes and 08.66 seconds she swam to qualify for the Olympics.
Her final event is the women’s 200m individual medley on August 10.
Vien admitted that she did not perform well but aims to advance to the semi-finals of the 200m, she told The thao & Van hoa (Sports & Culture) newspaper.
Earlier, Hoang Quy Phuoc also fared poorly in the men’s 200m individual freestyle when he finished seventh out of eight athletes. With a time of 1 minute and 50.39 seconds, also far slower than the 1 minute and 48.96 seconds that won him a gold medal at the 28th SEA Games in Singapore last year, he officially exited the Rio Olympics.
Weightlifter Thach Kim Tuan competed in the men’s 56kg category. Though he lifted 157kg in the snatch, he failed in the clean and jerk at 157kg and 160kg three times.
Also in the men’s 56kg category, his teammate Tran Le Quoc Toan was unable to lift 157kg in the clean and jerk. Toan’s total lift was 275kg, leaving him unlikely to secure a medal.
Injuries hampered gymnast Phan Thi Ha Thanh’s performance on the day. She scored 14.233 in the women’s vault, ranking 10th, and 13.800 in the balance beam, ranking 21st.
Those results were worse than her achievements at the Varna World Challenge Cup three months ago in Bulgaria, 14.400 and 14.367 respectively.-VNA

Vietnam ranked sixth in the medal tally of the Rio 2016 Olympics on the first day, August 6 (local time), after marksman Hoang Xuan Vinh secured the historic gold medal.
Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has sent a letter to congratulate the Vietnamese delegation to the Rio Games and shooter Hoang Xuan Vinh in particular over the gold medal Vietnam has ever won.
The ambassador noted that among the 300,000 Vietnamese residing in the RoK, around 3,000 are living in Pyeongtaek and contributing actively to the local economy. Ho expressed his hope that the local authorities will continue support the overseas Vietnamese community in the city.
