Vietnamese workers in Algeria to be brought back home

Simco Song Da – the company sent a group of 55 Vietnamese workers to Algeria to work for the Chinese Dongyi Jiangsu Co. Ltd, said it tries to bring back employees who want to return home as soon as possible.
The employer is completing procedures for the workers, Nguyen Ngoc Thach, Deputy Director of Simco Song Da, told Vietnam News Agency correspondents in Algiers on October 31.
Vietnamese workers employed at the Chinese Dongyi Jiangsu Co. Ltd in Algeria who want to return home must pay 1,700 USD to end their contract ahead of schedule, he said, adding the Chinese employer and Simco Song Da Company reached the amount after two days of negotiation.
Simco Song Da Company would spend 2,500 USD in advance to help the returnees pay for the compensation and air tickets, he said.
Five Vietnamese employees who wanted to stay and work for the Chinese company would be allowed to sign other labour contracts, he noted.
On October 31, Thach visited 16 Vietnamese workers at the Ain Defla construction site, about 250km south of Algiers, the capital. The workers were sent to another of the contractor’s construction sites in Ain Defla after two were beaten on September 16.
Thach confirmed that the incident would not repeat itself and pledged to support those who wanted to return home.

According to them, the work contract they signed with the employer regulated that they were paid monthly. However, when working in Algeria, they were paid on piecework. After objecting, the workers were assaulted on September 16. Dau Hoang Anh and Dao Ngoc Cuong suffered the most serious injuries.
Following the cases, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung made a series of requests to protect the interests of Vietnamese citizens working abroad.-VNA
