Vong Thi Pagoda, also known as “Vĩnh Khánh Tự”, is located at 75 Vong Thi street, Buoi Ward, Tay Ho District, Hanoi.
The pagoda covers a wide area of 5,000 square meters, in the southwest of the West Lake. This area belongs to an ancient village of Hanoi. Vong Thi Pagoda was built under the reign of King Ly Nhan Tong (1072-1128). In 1947, the temple was once flattened and all Buddha statues were burned.
Over the last 900 years, the pagoda has been restored and embellished many times that its original appearance is almost lost. But Vong Thi Pagoda still preserves the ancient architecture with many unique patterns carved meticulously and exquisitely.
In 1965, a shelter of the Hanoi Party Committee was built under the pagoda’s yard. This was the command center for the capital's defence forces and people in the war against the US Air Force.
