The Vietnam Bar Federation (VBF) has released a statement opposingChina’s violation of international laws through the establishment of theso-called Sansha city, which comprises Vietnam’s Hoang Sa (Paracel) andTruong Sa (Spratly) archipelagoes.
“Vietnam hasfull legal and historical evidence to assert its indisputablesovereignty over the Hoang Sa and Truong Sa archipelagoes. China’sdecision to establish the so-called Sansha city infringed Vietnam’sterritorial sovereignty over the Hoang Sa and Truong Sa archipelagoesand seriously violated basic principles of international law and theUnited Nations Charter,” says the VBF.
The VBF alsostrongly condemns and opposes the invitation for bids for nine lots inthe East Sea by the Chinese National Offshore Oil Corporation(CNOOC).
These lots are situated within Vietnam ’sexclusive economic zone and continental shelf, around 13 nautical milesfrom Vietnam ’s Phu Quy island at the closest point and around 60nautical miles from Vietnam ’s shore.
China’sabove-mentioned act seriously infringes Vietnam’s sovereign rights andjurisdictional rights over the exclusive economic zone and continentalshelf as stated in Articles 55, 56, 57, 76 and 77 of the 1982 UNConvention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). This act also goes contraryto the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC)reached among the Governments of the ASEAN nations and China , saidthe statement.
The Vietnam Bar Federation demands thatChina immediately abolish the decision to set up the so-calledSansha city and the wrongful invitation for bids, adding that itcompletely supports the statements released by the Foreign Ministryspokesperson on June 21 and 26 on the aforementioned issues.
China must respect and strictly implement its commitments asspecified in the DOC,” says the VBF statement. It also calls on China,as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, to behave in aresponsible manner and in line with the UN Charter and internationallaws, especially the UNCLOS 1982.-VNA
