Week-long event raises awareness of sea-based economy, marine biodiversity

A host of activities are scheduled during the Vietnam Sea and Island Week, starting on June 1, to raise awareness and sense of responsibility among sectors, enterprises and people of the effective management, exploitation and use of natural resources and protection of marine environment.

Hanoi (VNA) – A host of activities are scheduled duringthe Vietnam Sea and Island Week, starting on June 1, to raise awareness and sense of responsibility among sectors, enterprises and people of the effective management, exploitationand use of natural resources and protection of marine environment.

There will be a forum on the sustainable development ofVietnam’s sea-based economy by 2030, alongside series of seminars andworkshops.

The Vietnam Sea and Island Week 2022 focuses on the theme “sustainabledevelopment of sea-based economy in association with preservation of biodiversityand marine ecosystems” this year, aiming to address challenges and limitationsin developing the marine economy in Vietnam.

The week-long event provides an opportunity to promote theParty and State’s policies and international laws on marine issues, Vietnam’s legitimaterights and benefits at sea, and the significance of sea, islands, ocean andmarine resources to humans; and enhance the sustainable development ofsea-based economy.

It is also expected to help translate the strategy for thesustainable development of Vietnam’s sea-based economy by 2030, with a visiontowards 2045, into reality.

According to the Blue Economy Scenarios for Vietnam report,Vietnam's sea is a humid tropical sea with diverse and productive ecosystems.The country’s marine area has about 20 ecosystems, including marine ecosystemsaround coastal islands, offshore islands especially water areas and deep seabedareas.

Mangroves, coral reefs, seagrass and lagoons are consideredtypical ecosystems because they are the most biodiverse, contains highestconservation value and ecological-economic significance. Coastal landscapes andislands together with natural ecosystems with high biodiversity, are also thepremise for the development of economic sectors such as tourism, fisheries andrenewable energy.

In addition, marine ecosystems also contain importantfunctions such as carbon sequestration (seagrass and mangroves), climate regulation and disasterprevention./.

Wutip storm ravages central Vietnam, leaving trail of dest🎃ruction

Vietnam ramps up plastic wast𝓡e recycling, reuse, treatment efforts

In 2019, Quang Ninh became one of the first localities in Vietnam to launch a province-wide campaign against plastic waste, mobilising the participation of the political system, the business sector, and the general public. Other localities—such as Hai Phong, Da Nang, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City—have also effectively implemented waste-sorting initiatives at source, along with models for plastic-free markets and urban areas.
