Workshop seeks measures to boost Vietnam-India relations

Ho Chi Minh City (VNA) – The Vietnam - India Friendship Association in H🅘o Chi Minh City andthe Southern Institute of Social Sciences under the Vietnam Academy of SocialSciences (VASS) on Marchಌ 21 held a workshop "Vietnam - India Relations:Tradition and Present", seeking measures to boost the two countries’relations.
Participants discussed the potential, resources, and strengths of Vietnam and Indiain the development process of each country. They also touched upon directionsand opportunities to intensify their cooperation in the coming time. Associate Professor,Dr. Tran Nam Tien from University of Social Sciences and Humanities (USSH) under the Vietnam National University-HCM City said that from the establishmentof their diplomatic relations in 1972 to that of their strategicpartnership in 2007, and the comprehensive strategic partnership in 2016, thepolitical-diplomatic relationship between the two countries has beenincreasingly consolidated and developed, creating a strong impetus forcooperation in various fields. The relationship wasfounded by President Ho Chi Minh and Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, and hasbeen cultivated by generations of their leaders through the exchange ofhigh-level delegations and commitments to support each other in multilateraland international forums. Researcher Dong ThiThuy Linh from the VASS's Institute of Indian and Southwest Asian Studies said that trade and investment relations are among the main pillars of Vietnam- India relations and have continuously grown steadily over the last decade. By the end of 2021, thetwo-way trade reached 13.2 billion USD and is headingfor 20 billion USD in the coming time. India is the 27th largest foreigninvestor out of the 140 countries and territories investing in Vietnam with more than300 projects and a total registered investment capital of nearly 1 billionUSD./.
Indian Ambassador to Vietnam Sandeep Arya on March 15 underlined the need to promote economic, trade and investment cooperation between the two countries, saying that this is a good time for the two sides to intensify similarities, thus fostering development cooperation.
Indonesian Minister of Trade Zulkifli Hasan and Indian Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal met in New Delhi on March 14 to discuss ways to strengthen bilateral collaboration in various sectors, including information technology, health, textiles, furniture, education, and human resources.
Minister of National Defence Gen. Phan Van Giang hosted a reception in Hanoi on March 16 for Indian Ambassador to Vietnam Sandeep Arya, during which they discussed measures to strengthen the two countries’ defence cooperation.
The Indian Embassy in Vietnam held ‘India Day- a Festival of Unity in Diversity’ in Hanoi on March 18, aiming to promote the cultural features of India to Vietnamese people.
Since the Strategic Partnership was established in 2020, Vietnam and New Zealand have witnessed steady growth in the relations. Beyond the remarkable 40% increase in bilateral trade over five years, political relations and multilateral interactions, particularly within the CPTPP framework, have remained highly positive.
Known as the “four pillars for Vietnam’s ascend”, the Pobiburo's Resolutions 57, 59, 66, and 68 focus on cultivating a robust national entrepreneurial spirit, unlocking resources for innovation across society, and accelerating the development of digital economy, knowledge-based economy, green economy, and circular economy, propelling Vietnam forward rapidly and firmly on the path of modernisation and international integration.
Minister of Finance Nguyen Van Thang cleared up deputies' concern regarding how to spur socio-economic growth, renew traditional growth motives and establish new momentum for development.
Vietnam proposed several priorities: narrowing the digital divide, strengthening women’s leadership in the digital economy and AI governance, and mobilising sustainable financing for gender equality initiatives in line with each country’s national priorities and context. Giang said he believes that building on the solid foundation nurtured over the past half-century and the strong determination of both nations, the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership will continue to grow in a more robust, comprehensive, and extensive manner, thus bringing more practical benefits to the two nations' people.
Highlighting the transformative potential of the draft law in revitalising Vietnam’s railway industry, Hoang Van Cuong, a deputy of Hanoi, expressed his support for Article 39, which empowers the Prime Minister to issue a list of railway-related goods and services to be assigned or ordered from domestic enterprises for production.
According to the Ministry of Public Security, Hoan, formerly Deputy Minister of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs, is under investigation for allegedly taking bribes in connection with a case involving the Hoang Long Construction and Manpower Supply JSC and related units.
