Workshop seeks ways to enhance urban climate resilience in Vietnam

Hanoi (VNA) – Participants at a nationalworkshop in Hanoi on March 7 sought ways to help raise the climate resilience of Vietnam's urban centres, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and protect the environment.

The event, co-organised by the Party Central Committee’sEconomic Commission, the Ministry of Construction and the French DevelopmentAgency (AFD), took place within the framework of the Water and NaturalResources Management Facility (WARM) facility funded by the European Union(EU).

Over the past 35 years of reform and development,Vietnam has made big strides in urban planning, with its urbanisation rateexpanding to 40% in 2022 from 30.5% in 2010, making up 70% of thenational GDP, heard a report.

However, the country lacks a master plan in the field to fulfill the targets of green growth, climateresilience and net zero emissions by 2050, the report pointed out.

Deputy Minister of Construction Nguyen Tuong Vanstressed the significance of the Politburo’s Resolution No. 06-NQ/TW onsustainable urban planning, construction, management and development.

With five viewpoints and six groups of major tasks,the document highlights the role and position of urban areas and urbanisationin national industrialisation and modernisation in the new period, laying thefoundation for urban transformation and development in Vietnam in a morecomprehensive and systematic fashion, he said.

The Government also adopted Resolution No. 148/NQ-CPdated November 11, 2022, on the issuance of an action programme implementing theresolution, which sets out five groups of tasks.

Under the resolution, the Government requestedunifying awareness and actions in sustainable urban planning, construction, managementand development. This resolution also includes plans to improve planning quality, investment in urban infrastructure capable of adapting to climate change, and a review of building projects ofministries and agencies with relevant policies and legal documents.

Ambassador Giorgio Aliberti, head of the EUDelegation to Vietnam, stressed the EU’s strong commitments to supporting theVietnamese Government in achieving sustainable development goals.

The WARM facility aims to support the preparationand implementation of more strategic investment projects for water and naturalresource management. The experience gained from these projects will feed intothe dialogue with the government on the climate, environment and naturalresources management.

Experts from France's Lyon, a city that has maintained its cooperation with Ho Chi Minh City for 20 years in urban planningand management, shared their experience in sustainable urban development andaffirmed their readiness to help Vietnam in climate change mitigation andadaptation.   
 
Between May and July this year, there will be threethematic workshops in Son La, Quang Tri and Hau Giang provinces, focusing onrisks to urban planning in all mountainous, coastal and Mekong Deltalocalities./.

👍 Vietnam pioneers use of AI and remote sensing to monitor seawater quality

According to Dr. Vu Anh Tuan, Deputy Director General of the Vietnam Space Centre and head of the project, this is the first study in Vietnam to simultaneously employ Sentinel-2 satellite data, advanced machine learning algorithms, and the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud computing platform to model and monitor key seawater quality parameters.

ꦡ Vietnam ramps up plastic waste recycling, reuse, treatment efforts

In 2019, Quang Ninh became one of the first localities in Vietnam to launch a province-wide campaign against plastic waste, mobilising the participation of the political system, the business sector, and the general public. Other localities—such as Hai Phong, Da Nang, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City—have also effectively implemented waste-sorting initiatives at source, along with models for plastic-free markets and urban areas.
