WWF backs forest biodiversity conservation in Thua Thien-Hue

The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) has committed 3.5 million USD in financial support for forest biodiversity conservation in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue during 2012-2022.

Thua Thien-Hue (VNA) – The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) has committed3.5 million USD in financial support for forest biodiversity conservation inthe central province of Thua Thien-Hue during 2012-2022.

Under the cooperation document between the two sides, the money will be used tocarried out six projects in the locality, including a carbon and biodiversity(Carbi) programme in Sao La Nature Reserve, the expanded area of Bach MaNational Park, and the green corridor in Nam Dong and A Luoi districts, and aproject to enhance public role in preservation work in the central area ofTruong Son Mountain Range.

Besides, WWF has committed financial aid of 105,000 USD for the implementationof the Green Annamites projectin the locality.

Meeting with Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Nguyen Dung on April9, WWF Regional Director for Asia-Pacific Prasanna De Silva said hisorganisation will help the province with the Carbi programme during 2019-2023,hoping that the local authority will soon approve the project so that it can bekicked off in May 2019.

Dung,for his part, thanked WWF’s support for the province in the past time whileaffirming that the WWF’s projects have helped the locality preserve forestbiodiversity in the context of climate change, and created sustainablelivelihoods for people in the projects’ areas.

He pledged to urge competent departments and sectors to assess the projects andsubmit to the provincial People’s Committee for approval.

The province is carrying out the “Green Sunday” project to raise public awarenessof environmental protection, he said, expressing his hope for WWF’s engagementin this scheme in the coming time.-VNA
