Young guitarist wins first prize in US competition

Vietnamese music student Tran Tuan An won first prize at the Society of American Musicians (SAM) Guitar Competition on March 3.

A former student of the Hanoi Academy of Music, and now studyingliberal arts at North Park University in Chicago, An has overcomecompetition from all over the US to take the prize.

He won first prize in the Vietnam Music Young Talent competition in 2004 when he was just 12 years old.

Two years later, An was offered scholarships to study at the SydneyMusic Academy and in the US, and he decided on North ParkUniversity.

In 2010, the 21 year old was selectedas one of the country’s Best Overseas Students and received theCertificate of Merit granted by Vice President Nguyen Thi Doan.

An earlier also won a music contest hosted by his university last month.

SAM was founded in 1914 with the intent of promoting the bestinterests of music in the US. The society offers assistance andencouragement to young musicians and promising artists through itsannual competition as well as performance opportunities.

Besides the guitar competition, the SAM also hosts competitions everyspring for a wide range of other instruments, including cello, flute,piano, viola and violin.-VNA

⛦ Vietnam re-elected to 2005 UNESCO Convention’s Intergovernmental Committee

This is the first time since the adoption of the Convention that a country has served two consecutive terms on the Committee. The outcome shows the trust and recognition that member states have given Vietnam for its efforts and achievements in carrying out and promoting the Convention, as well as for its active role, strong standing, and growing credibility at UNESCO.
