The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has approved a component of the Water Management Project for Rural Development in the Mekong Delta (WB6), which aims to build and install an irrigation drain system along the Cut Canal in the southern province of Kien Giang.
According to the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the sub-project will be implemented with a total investment of nearly 263 billion VND (around 11.8 million USD), including 9.5 million USD sourced from the World Bank.
Scheduled to be completed in early 2017, the irrigation efforts target climate change and rising sea level adaptation.
Once operational, the project will help manage water sources and prevent salt intrusion and flood tides while controlling and draining water, thus ensuring stable agriculture production and aquaculture activities in Rach Gia city and Tan Hiep and Chau Thanh districts.-VNA
Well-developed irrigation systems in the Mekong Delta have played a key role in agricultural and fishery production and the ongoing shifting of the regions' economic structure, speakers pointed out at a Dec 11 conference in Can Tho.
More than 385 km of river and sea dykes in the southern province of Kien Giang have been damaged, posing great danger to local people, especially as the rainy season is coming.
The Southern Institute for Water Resources Planning has set aside over 7 trillion VND (330 million USD) to develop irrigational infrastructure in the Mekong Delta between now and 2020, said its Director Nguyen Xuan Hien at a recent workshop in Kien Giang province.
