2014 golden globe awards honour ten young scientists

Ten outstanding young individuals with scientific research studies in information technology & communications, pharmacy & medicine, and biological & environmental technology received golden globe awards in 2014.

Theaward was initiated by the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union CentralCommittee and the Ministry of Science and Technology in 2003.

The annual event aims to encourage the youth to conduct scientificresearch and facilitate the development of useful projects for thecountry’s progress and advancement.

Among the recipients wereDr. Truong Quoc Phong from the Hanoi University of Science andTechnolgy, who chaired two highly-acclaimed State-level study projectsand was co-author of 25 articles and studies published abroad, and Dr.Nguyen Thi Phuong Nhung from the PetroVietnam University, whoparticipated in researching and developing “anti-mosquito nets” that arewidely used in Africa, helping reduce the number of mosquito-causedmalaria fatalities.

Last year, the organisation’s board received 50 entries from 26 teams nationwide.

In2003, the award was first presented to outstanding individuals ininformation technology (IT). It then covered pharmacy & medicine andbiological & environmental technology studies in 2011.

Alarge number of young scientists at home as well as those living andstudying abroad have presented their studies over the last 11 years,resulting in as many as 115 talented young recipients of the award todate.-VNA

✤ PM calls for cooperation with Sweden in nuclear energy technology

The PM revealed Vietnam’s plan to develop nuclear power in the near future, and called on the Swedish side to assist Vietnam in developing and refining legal and policy frameworks for the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes; training and developing human resources; ensuring nuclear safety; and conducting training and drills to improve incident management capabilities.
