A 5.8-magnitude earthquake hit an area, about 34km southwest of Daruba in North Maluku province, Indonesia, on April 24, according to the Manado City Geophysics Station Sandy.

Jakarta (VNA) - A 5.8-magnitude earthquake hit an area, about 34km southwestof Daruba in Indonesia's North Maluku province, on April 24, according to the Manado CityGeophysics Station Sandy.
 
The quake occurred at a depth of 78 kilometres. There were no immediate reportsof any loss of life or damage to property.

Earlier the day, a quake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale shook the area,about 31km southwest of Daruba at a depth of 10km.

Indonesia, one of the most disaster-prone nations on earth, straddles thePacific "Ring of Fire", where tectonic plates collide and a largeportion of the world’s volcanic eruptions and earthquakes occur. 

In 2004, a big earthquake off the northern Indonesian island of Sumatratriggered a tsunami across the Indian Ocean, killing 220,000 people in 13countries, including more than 168,000 in Indonesia.-VNA
