A 5.9 magnitude quake struck off the coast of Indonesia's Sumatra island on November 1, but there was no tsunami warning or immediate reports of damage, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

Jakarta (VNA) - A 5.9magnitude quake struck off the coast of Indonesia's Sumatra island on November1, but there was no tsunami warning or immediate reports of damage, accordingto the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The quake struck at a depthof 6 kilometres, about 255 kilometres south of the town of Sinabang.

Located in a regiondubbed the Pacific Ring of Fire – an arc-shaped area of frequent seismicactivity – Indonesia is rocked by thousands of earthquakes a year.

In January, more than 100people were killed and thousands left homeless by a 6.2-magnitude quake thatstruck Sulawesi island, reducing buildings to a tangled mass of twisted metaland chunks of concrete in the seaside city of Mamuju.

A 7.5-magnitude quake and asubsequent tsunami in Palu in 2018 left more than 4,300 people dead or missing./.
