Hanoi (VNA) – An action month for labour safety and hygiene this year will be held inMay, with the launching ceremony to be organized in Quang Nam province on May4.

The action month will deal with accessing and managing labour safety andhygiene risks at workplaces.

Accordingly, therewill be a dialogue between the National Council for Labour Safety and Hygieneand enterprises, a seminar discussing experience in occupational accidents andpreventive measures, a training course on health care for health workers, amongothers.

Labour safety andhygiene inspection will be launched at 10 construction sites and eight groupsand corporations nationwide.

At a press conference held on April 11, Ha Tat Thang, head of the labour safetydepartment of the Ministry of Labour, Invalids, and Social Affairs said 7,997occupational accidents occurred nationwide in 2018, taking the lives of 1,039labourers and leaving 1,939 others seriously injured.

Localities with most occupational accident fatalities in the year included HoChi Minh City, Hanoi, Hai Duong, Thai Nguyen, Yen Bai, Dong Nai, Quang Ninh, CaMau, Quang Nam and Binh Duong provinces.

Most of occupational accidents occurred in construction, building materials production,metallurgical engineering, and other fields.

Employers held accountable for nearly 46.5 percent of the total occupationalaccidents, in which their failure to build safe working practices for employeesaccounted for 24.56 percent and their failure to fully train safe workingpractices for employees accounted for 7.2 percent. Meanwhile, employees’violation of labour safety practices was blamed for 18.42 percent of the totalaccidents.

In 2018, 2 millionlabourers took periodical health examinations. Occupational deafness was foundin 66.6 percent of the labourers, followed by silicosis (16.8 percent), and occupational chronic bronchitis(9.9 percent).-VNA
