Hanoi(VNA) – A month to promote workplace safety and hygiene, the first of its kind,will begin on May 1, the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairsrevealed at a press conference in Hanoi on April 24.
A ceremony to launchthe event nationwide will take place in Hanoi Cultural Friendship Palace on May6.
Speaking at thepress conference, Director of the ministry’s Department of Work Safety Ha Tat Thangsaid national weeks for occupational safety and hygiene and fire preventionover the past 18 years along with the national programme on labour safety andhygiene have reduced work-related accidents and diseases and raised awarenessof the issues among workers and employers.
The national weekfor occupational safety and hygiene will be replaced by the action month from2017, he added.
This year, the eventwill focus on enhancing training on workplace safety and hygiene to preventaccidents and diseases.
The Ministry ofLabour, Invalids and Social Affairs will send three teams of inspectors to 69enterprises and several construction sites in April and May while theministries of Trade and Industry, Public Security, Transportation, and Health,and the Vietnam General Confederation of Labour will also conduct inspections.
Last year, Vietnamhad approximately 8,000 workplace accidents, injuring more than 8,250 peopleand costing over 179 billion VND.-VNA
An alarming increase in the number of labour related accidents has emphasised the importance of improving awareness of the responsibility of employers, employees and the public about labour safety.
The third ASEAN forum on labour safety and hygiene was held in the central city of Da Nang on April 28, attracting nearly 200 delegates from 10 ASEAN member states.
Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has agreed with the Vietnam General Confederation of Labour (VGCL)’s proposal to pilot a project on building residential areas.
