Jakarta (VNA) – The ASEAN Future Forum (AFF) 2025 themed, Building a United, Inclusive, and Resilient ASEAN amidst Global Transformations, not only reflects Vietnam’s strong commitment to regional integration but also provides an opportunity for ASEAN to discuss major issues and seek solutions to ensure stability and sustainable development in the region, according to Veeramalla Anjaiah, a senior researcher fellow at the Centre for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS).

As a country committed to regional cohesion and peace, Vietnam is urging ASEAN nations to turn commitments into concrete outcomes, enhance coordination in addressing both traditional and non-traditional challenges, and build on past achievements to drive ASEAN’s overall development, he told the Vietnam News Agency (VNA)'s resident correspondents in Jakarta.

Anjaiah commended Vietnam’s dedication to regional integration, multilateralism, and sustainable development, noting that these efforts continue to inspire and strengthen friendship and cooperation within and beyond ASEAN. Furthermore, Vietnam’s dynamic growth and proactive engagement in global affairs underscore its commitment to cooperation and a shared vision for ASEAN’s future.

🐎 He went on to say that the hosting of the two-day event, beginning on February 25, will further elevate Vietnam’s position within ASEAN, reinforce its ties with fellow member states, and foster greater collaboration between member countries and its international partners.

Regarding global and regional trends that could impact ASEAN in the coming time, Anjaiah, noted that the bloc’s cohesion and effectiveness help face challenges from regional issues and major power competition. In this context, ASEAN’s success will depend on its ability to maintain unity among member states in pursuing common interests, despite increasing external pressures.

Another significant factor that might have an impact on ASEAN, especially in economic terms, is the return of Donald Trump to the White House. The tariff policies of the Trump administration previously strained US–China trade relations and could have significant repercussions for ASEAN countries, particularly those with trade surpluses with the US.

Given the geopolitical tensions that may disrupt trade flows, Anjaiah emphasised the need for ASEAN to develop a flexible and effective response strategy. He suggested that ASEAN should continue its commitment to free trade agreements with major powers and diversify trade partnerships to mitigate risks from geopolitical conflicts while enhancing economic stability. Additionally, intra-regional cooperation remains a key factor in strengthening ASEAN’s resilience and reducing dependence on external partners.

🌱 Anjaiah also highlighted that investments in infrastructure, logistics, and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and automation will enhance ASEAN’s competitiveness and attract international investment. A stronger ASEAN will contribute to global peace, stability, and prosperity, he added./.
