– Party General Secretary To Lam hosted a reception in Ho Chi Minh City on January 9 for former Party and State leaders and veteran officials, as well as outstanding intellectuals, scientists, and artists from southern provinces and cities.

– A multiple of substantive measures were sketched out to deepen the Vietnam - Laos relations at the 47th meeting of the two countries’ intergovernmental committee for bilateral cooperation held in Vientiane on January 9 under the co-chair of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and his Lao counterpart Sonexay Siphandone.

The two sides concurred to maintain and improve the efficacy of the existing cooperation mechanisms, effectively arrange high-level visits and meetings, bolster defence - security collaboration, and build a Vietnam - Lao border of peace, stability, cooperation and comprehensive development. – Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has issued a decision on setting up a steering committee for regional and international financial centres.

PM Chinh will serve as head of the steering committee. Meanwhile, the deputy heads include Standing Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Hoa Binh, the Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee, the Minister of Planning and Investment, the Minister of Finance, the Governor of the State Bank of Vietnam, and the Secretary of the Da Nang city Party Committee. – On the occasion of the New Year 2025, Philippine Ambassador to Vietnam Meynardo Los Banos Montealegre spoke to Vietnam News Agency about the major achievements in Vietnam-Philippines relations in 2024 and prospects for 2025 as the two countries celebrate the 10th anniversary of their Strategic Partnership.

According to the ambassador, over the past year, the two countries have undertaken various activities to strengthen bilateral ties, including the state visit to Vietnam by Philippine President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., the visit to Manila by Vietnamese Minister of National Defence Phan Van Giang, and the first joint exercises on search, rescue and firefighting in the East Sea (internationally known as the South China Sea). In 2025, the Philippines aims to promote cooperation in maritime affairs, agriculture, and culture with Vietnam, while also welcoming closer collaboration in other areas. Read full story

– Vietnam will take various actions to achieve a growth rate of at least 8% in 2025 as set by the Government, Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment Nguyen Duc Tam told a regular Government press briefing on January 8.

Tam stated that in late December 2024, the Prime Minister issued an official dispatch requiring ministries, sectors, and localities to implement growth scenarios in order to achieve a minimum growth rate of 8% this year, with the potential for double-digit expansion if conditions allow. – The department of taxation of large enterprises under the General Department of Taxation (GDT) has recently announced that four foreign suppliers conducting business in Vietnam through e-commerce digital platforms have not yet complied with regulations on tax registration through the GDT’s e-portal.
